JOB SUMMARY

The Radiation Safety Program provides radiation safety and health physics services to UT Southwestern Medical Center, University Hospitals, Parkland Health and its associated clinics, and Children's Health and its associated clinics. The Radiation Safety Program Manager serves as the Radiation Safety Officer and is responsible for the development and maintenance of a comprehensive radiation safety and health physics program. This includes maintaining multiple state registrations for x-ray and mammography, performing radiation safety and health physics audits to ensure regulatory compliance, developing and providing radiation safety and health physics trainings, and maintaining records as required per regulatory standards. The Radiation Safety Program Manager will supervise three technical staff comprising our Registration (Radiation Producing Machines) Program. The Radiation Safety Program Manager will also provide support to the Radiation Safety Advisory Committee, Subcommittee for Human Use of Radiation in Research, Radiation Protocol Committees, and several MR safety committees. This program encompasses fluoroscopy, CT, linear accelerators, radiography, MRI, dental, and mammography and includes a large dosimetry program (~4,000 badges per quarter). The Registration Program also covers our cyclotron facility and cutting-edge technologies, including PET MR for nuclear medicine research and PET LINAC for adaptive radiation therapy. Qualified individuals should be willing to meet the challenge of emerging technologies and development of hybrid devices. This position is required to work with regulatory agencies and the departments in developing policies and procedures. This position is considered to be "Essential." Qualified candidates will meet the following: Individual must qualify as Radiation Safety Officer in State of Texas for institutional radiation registrations. Experience in radiation safety and health physics applicable to an Academic Medical Center. Academic degree in health physics is preferred.

JOB DUTIES

Leads respective safety program as the Radiation Safety Officer or Laser Safety Officer recognized by the state regulatory agency. Responsibilities include the following: a. Serves as primary point of contact for all correspondence with state regulatory agency b. Maintains state registrations and RAM licenses so that registration/license conditions reflect current operating status for each respective hospital system. c. Ensures that physicians and staff have appropriate credentials and qualifications for medical use (both research and clinical) of RAM, radiation producing machines, and lasers per state regulations and radiation and laser safety program policies and procedures. d. Ensures that laboratories and clinical facilities operate within the conditions approved by the state registrations and RAM licenses. e. Develops, implements, and interprets safety policies, procedures, and programs campus wide, which includes three hospital systems; to increase employee safety awareness and maintain compliance with state regulations. f. Maintains required records and documentation. g. Maintain qualifications to serve as Radiation Safety Officer or Laser Safety Officer. Stays abreast of environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices and summarizes changes. Identifies potential safety and health hazards and discrepancies with safety policies, regulatory agency standards, and national guidelines, and develops strategies or implements control measures to ensure a safe environment. Prepares reports for submission to supervisors and/or managers (including research labs and clinical services), which identify the potential hazard(s) and/or program discrepancies found and provides recommendations for control and compliance. Participates in the development and delivery of radiation safety, MR safety, and laser safety training. Ensures that safety training complies with applicable state regulations. Participates as an active member of various UT Southwestern committees to include the Radiation Safety Advisory Committee, Subcommittee for Non-Human Use of Radiation in Research, Subcommittee for Human Use of Radiation in Research, Radiation Protocol Committees (including Interventional Fluoroscopy and Computed Tomography), MR Safety Committees (for each respective hospital system), and Clinical Laser Safety Committee. Prepares various types of reports including submissions to safety committees and activity reports. Evaluates existing buildings and construction plans and projects to identify radiation and laser safety concerns and present recommendations. Reviews shielding design reports, access controls, safety signage and postings, room configurations. Participates in or leads in the conduct of accident/incident investigations, including those covering medical events as defined by the state regulatory agency and sentinel events as defined by The Joint Commission. Directs communication to the state regulatory agency, when required, for both verbal and written reporting requirements for medical events. Ensures written reports address all reporting requirements as required by state regulatory agency. Ensures hospital system makes all notifications (i.e., reports to patient) as required by state regulatory agency. Supervises staff and manages Human Resources activities including recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations. Prepares for and responds to emergencies including hazardous materials incidents and emergency situations involving radiation and laser. Prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations. Participates in emergency drills including fire drills. May be on-call or emergency situations may require the individual to respond at times outside of set work schedule. Acts as the secondary back-up for the staff member responsible for the following essential functions: radioactive materials ordering and receipt program, radioactive materials shipping and receiving to include appropriate DOT and IATA expertise, radioactive waste shipping and disposal. Performs other duties as assigned.
